Benefits of Eating Natural Organic Foods

The European Union funded a four year project to look at the many benefits of organic farming and food. The research results were published in Handbook of Organic Food Safety and Quality, 2007 and an article in the Sunday Times (U.K.) on October 28, 2007 was simply entitled "Official: Organic is Really Better". Some of the report findings are a true wakeup call.

  • Beneficial antioxidants in milk were 90% higher in cows fed organic feed compared to milk from conventional herds.
  • Higher levels of Vitamin E, omega-3 and beta carotene were found in organic cows milk and also in the flesh of organically fed, free range chickens compared to factory-raised birds.
  • Organic fruits and vegetables had as much as 40% more antioxidants (polyphenols, flavonoids, vitamin C and lutein) that can help cut the risks of heart disease and cancer as well as higher levels of beneficial minerals such as iron and zinc, while harmful elements like lead, mercury, aluminum and nitrates were significantly lower compared to conventionally grown produce.

So the more we choose meat and produce that is organically grown for our families, including our animals and pets, we will all enjoy the benefits of better nutrition and health and support the gentle revolution of organic agriculture locally and globally.

As Dr. Nettie Wiebe stated at the 38th Annual National Farmer's Union Convention in 2007, "corporate concentration and commercialization of seed genetics and the marketing structures of food products has created a global food system that is controlled by a diminishing handful of multinational corporations, to the detriment of family farms. To illustrate this, the Canadian Wheat Board is a consequence of the corporatizing of the marketing structure. This trade is not about feeding people, it's about growing food for export and profit and in the long run a system that is focused on exports can impact a country’s basic ability to feed itself."
